Why I chose LAS at Illinois

I remember my senior year in high school being a lot of fun but also very stressful at times. On top of my regular homework load, I was researching universities, comparing statistics, and perfecting all my application essays. I applied to about 10 different schools; I was casting a wide net. I knew I wanted to study chemical engineering after deciding against a direct pharmacy program, but I was not really sure what kind of school experience I was looking for. When I had the chance to visit my friend at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign my senior year, I fell in love with everything about the university. While she was giving me the full campus tour, I already felt like a student walking around the Quad and I became more familiar with the college town as the weekend progressed. I felt accepted and welcomed immediately. I remember thinking “this could be my home away from home.”

I was ecstatic to receive my acceptance letter for chemical engineering at Illinois, but as other offers came, I felt it was necessary to at least give other places a chance. I was hesitant to fall head over heels with the first college I visited. I went on other college tours, attended information sessions and evaluated scholarships and financial aid from various schools. Illinois trumped them every time.

I love being in the College of LAS because I am able to have a very well rounded core curriculum and participate in awesome student groups like LAS Leaders. I’ve had the chance to meet and work with many fun, hard-working, and passionate people in that organization. I’ve also had the opportunity to host prestigious LAS alumni receiving awards during their visits back to campus for Homecoming. It is very inspiring to see how former students have made the most out of their degree and learn about all the amazing things they have accomplished. It opens up my imagination to all the things I could accomplish, their journey started at the same campus I currently call my home.

Being in the College of LAS really helps me diversify my education, friendships, and experiences here at Illinois and I hope all students have the chance to experience that, as well!
