What to expect at transfer registration

If you’re wondering what to expect from your transfer registration, I have some helpful tips in store for you. I remember waking up at the hotel and getting ready for the long day ahead of me. I had so many emotions running through my head. I was a little nervous, a little scared, and a little uncertain. More importantly, I was excited!Sara Wegner

This experience for me was much more than just an introduction to the university, it was where I would get my first ever I-Card, meet with my academic adviser for the first time, and tour this big, beautiful university. At first, I didn’t really know what to expect. I thought that I would never remember everything they told me to remember!

Luckily, I can let you in on some quick tips: Write things down. Take notes. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Someone in the room might have the same question as you do, so ask it! Make sure you write down your questions before you even get to campus. That way, even though other questions will come up, you will not later regret forgetting to ask.

After the campus introduction session at registration, I split off for my college session with Liberal Arts & Sciences. Meeting with my adviser was my favorite part of the whole day. It was confusing, but I got through it. At first, I thought I could just sit there and they would pick my classes for me and I would be on my merry way. However, I realized I needed to know how to pick my classes and how to search for what classes were still available.

The registration system can be confusing and hard to understand at first, but it gets easier each time you pick classes or access the website. I wanted to have a whole plan figured out of what I would take each semester for the rest of my time here. However, it is not always easy to do that. Depending on your registration time ticket, you may not get into a class you planned to take because it is full. You may end up taking a different one.

My best tip when picking classes is to write down the ones you want to take each semester. Then, check to see if those classes are still available. If one isn’t, stay in contact with your adviser and he or she will be happy to help you choose an alternative course.

Be warned, classes do fill up quickly. Do not stress if this happens because chances are, you will be able to take the course you wanted the following semester. For advice on how to try to avoid that, talk with your adviser. He or she will know if the class is a popular one and can share your chances of getting in if you are worried.

Luckily, I was able to get into all the courses that I wanted to take my first semester. A tip when picking your classes with your adviser: try to get gen-eds out of the way early on, so when you get to your senior year, you will not have to worry about them.

The last part of my day was going to get my I-Card! This moment for me was super exciting. I know it can be kind of confusing at first when they tell you that you can go get your I-Card on lunch or on a break. Go to the Illini Union Bookstore! This is different from the huge Illini Union off of the Quad! Just a heads up, they will take your picture for this, so make sure to look your best as you will be keeping it for as many years.

As a final tip: Be yourself. Do not be afraid to make some friends along the way, as well! I was fortunate enough to have met a girl in my college session and found out she was in the same major. We are good friends now and continue to take classes together. Do not be afraid to reach out for help, ask questions, or simply ask for directions when you’re on campus. I hope you all have a fantastic time picking your classes, meeting your adviser, and also obtaining your I-Card!
