Homecoming week: Illini spirit, activities to engage in, campus comradery

LINDSEY SCHMIDTNothing screams school pride like Homecoming week, and this couldn’t be more true at the University of Illinois. This weeklong celebration of this great university brings everyone together and is a fun time to be had by all. With the entire campus bleeding orange and blue, it is impossible not to be proud to be an Illini!

It all starts on Sunday with the annual Homecoming 5k. The proceeds go to the University of Illinois Student Assistance Center, and you get a tech race shirt when you sign up! Running alongside hundreds of fellow Illini decked out in school spirit wear is a great kickoff to the week, not to mention great way to get that heart rate going!

Monday you can find Lunch on the Quad, sponsored by the Illini Union. All you have to do is show your i-card. Who doesn’t love free food with a view?

Tuesday is Illinois Spirit Day. I know what you’re thinking, isn’t every day at Illinois spirit day? Expect to see an even bigger sea of orange T-shirts and Illini wear throughout campus on this day! Tuesday evening will be a comedy show. Last year featured Jay Pharoah, who used to be on Saturday Night Live! You definitely don’t want to miss this event.

Wednesday there is a Homecoming BBQ. Gather up some friends and head over to Washington Park for some free BBQ and a guaranteed good time!

Friday is my favorite night of all. It begins with a Block Party, followed by the Homecoming parade that goes throughout campustown. The pep rally and band concert surely will pump you up for the football game and make you proud to be an Illini!

Saturday is the grand finale: the football game! Time to cheer head over to Memorial Stadium and cheer on the team surrounded by thousands of fellow fans. This year we are facing Wisconsin, so I’m sure you won’t want to miss this Big 10 rivalry!

Homecoming Bench

These are only some of the events, and you can surely find more activities throughout the week. Homecoming is one of the best times of the year, so be sure to take advantage of all the experiences and comradery that campus has to offer. After all, what could be better than free stuff, Illini football, and sharing your pride for the greatest school on earth?
