#ILoveLAS Week and why I love LAS

I am an intern in the College of LAS’s Advancement office and we recently put on our very first I Love LAS week. Each day was filled with fun freebies and activities for students in the college. On Monday, we gave away free #ILoveLAS T-shirts and students wrote on orange hearts about why they loved LAS. LAURA LOVETERE

Tuesday, students signed a poster board promoting LAS in exchange for candy. We had our Thank-a-Professor event on Wednesday, during which students wrote thank-you cards to their favorite faculty members. To end the week, we passed out cups of hot cocoa, reusable coffee sleeves, and Hershey candy bars. Each day, we had students from LAS student organizations volunteer at the booths (shout out to LAS Leaders, LAS Council, Communication Leaders, and the James Scholars). All in all, the week was a success. We had 150 thank-you cards written for professors and received a lot of positive feedback on our events.

The week had me reflecting a lot on why I myself, love LAS. I came in as a freshman majoring in commercial French and I will leave with three additional degrees from the College of LAS (a major in communication, a minor in German and a certificate in translation.) Looking back at the past four years here at Illinois, all of my favorite classes and professors came from the College of LAS.

In these classes, I have been able to work with students from around the world with different academic concentrations. Because of this, I have become comfortable leading teams and working with people from other cultures. Throughout my time at Illinois, I’ve been encouraged to use my creativity on assignments. As a result, I have been able to further develop my skills and even add works to my portfolio. I’ve had the opportunity to present on subjects I’m passionate about and lead classroom discussions on my own. This helped me improve my public speaking and analytic skills.

Because of LAS, I have developed so many unique skills that set me apart from others applying for the same jobs. After four years here, I can truly say that #ILoveLAS.
