Courses & Curricula Office

We are the LAS Office of Courses and Curricula. Our team provides consultation and assistance at all levels of course and curricula proposal development and review processes. Whether you are developing a new course or revising an existing one, seeking general education certification (or recertification) for courses, creating a new program of study (undergraduate or graduate major, minor, or concentration), proposing an undergraduate or graduate certificate, updating your unit’s programs in the Academic Catalog, or seeking advice on learning outcomes assessment practices, we are here to help. Use the resources below or contact us for more information.

Courses

The establishment of new courses and the revision of existing courses require the creation of a digitally accessible syllabus that meets LAS and Office of the Provost guidelines. Proposals are submitted through the CIM-C system and are reviewed by the LAS Courses and Curricula Committee, with feedback provided as needed. Revisions to existing courses are limited to changes that do not substantially alter course content or student learning outcomes; otherwise, the course must be deactivated and re-proposed as a new course. Course deactivation involves submitting a request in CIM-C with appropriate notifications. Deactivated courses may later be reactivated through the Registrar and processed as a revision, provided that justification and a current syllabus are submitted. Resources and guidelines for course creation, revision, and deactivation are available under the "Resources" button:

Curricula

The LAS academic program process follows a structured sequence to ensure compliance and smooth approvals, beginning with early consultation with our office to clarify processes and requirements. Proposals are then submitted through the CIM-P system and routed for department, college, and campus reviews and approvals. After launch, programs are maintained through periodic reviews and reporting requirements. If necessary, programs may also be phased down or discontinued through the same CIM-P system. Resources and guidelines for creating or revising curricula are available under the "Resources" button:

Certificates

LAS certificate programs are categorized as non-transcriptable undergraduate and graduate certificates (“small-c”) and transcriptable graduate (“big-C”) certificates, each with distinct approval processes and transcript implications. All proposals are reviewed by the LAS Courses and Curricula Committee and must justify the certificate format, define clear learning outcomes, and outline structure, credit hours, and advising responsibility. Non-transcriptable certificates require digital credentials issued via Accredible and coordination with ATLAS. Transcriptable graduate certificates follow the formal program approval process (CIM-P), appear on transcripts, and may qualify for financial aid. Student Learning Outcomes and Program Assessment

Student learning outcomes for courses and programs should clearly state what students will be able to do, using actionable and measurable verbs while focusing on observable skills, knowledge, and competencies. Programs are required to regularly assess these outcomes through unit assessment plans, using both direct methods (e.g., exams, projects) and indirect methods (e.g., surveys, placement data), and to report results annually to meet accreditation and continuous improvement goals. Assessment plans should combine these methods to evaluate student learning effectively and inform program review.
