Admission to LAS Honors

There are currently three methods of entry into LAS' Honors, which is also known as the James Scholar Program: invitation, self-nomination, and ICT.

Invitation

To be eligible for the LAS Honors Program, students must be accepted at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Based on that application, the top 10 percent of incoming first-years are invited to be a part of the program.

Students who are invited to be an LAS James Scholar as a member of the incoming class will receive a letter at the mailing address included on their application to the university within a few weeks of their acceptance notification. LAS Honors will also communicate with you at the email address you listed on your application to the university throughout the spring. Please be sure to add LASHonors@illinois.edu to your email contacts to make sure you don't miss important information and reminders from our program. These communications will include information about opportunities to learn more about our program and how to accept your invitation to be a James Scholar.

To accept your invitation to be a James Scholar you must both accept your admission to Illinois through your MyIllini account and accept your invitation to be a James Scholar at the link provided in communications from our office. Both of these acceptances must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. May 1.There will be no acceptance of late submissions for the LAS James Scholar Program.

Self-nomination

Current students who wish to be considered for self-nomination may apply after their first year or after their second year of higher education (previous years may have been completed at any college or university). Students who transfer to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who will complete a minimum of four semesters, or two years of coursework, at Illinois may also apply.

All applicants must have earned a 3.70 GPA to be considered. Current students: your cumulative University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign GPA will be considered. Transfer students: your cumulative transfer GPA will be considered. Self-nomination applications will be available from June 1 through June 30 on an annual basis. Please apply during that time to be considered for admission before the coming academic year. No late applications will be considered.

The self-nomination application for the 2020-2021 academic year will be available here on June 1 of 2020.

Intercollegiate Transfer (ICT)

If you are transferring in to the College of LAS and were a James Scholar in good standing within another college at U of I, you will be welcomed into the LAS Honors Program provided you meet our GPA requirements (all James Scholars in LAS must have a 3.50 to continue as James Scholars). Please know that you must have already been a James Scholar in your previous college to ICT in to the LAS James Scholar Program. If you were not already a participating/certified James Scholar, you would need to self-nominate provided you meet our entry requirements.
