LAS Alum's Commercial Airs in Super Bowl-Takes Second Place
February 1, 2007

LAS alum Kristin Dehnert reached her dream of seeing her commercial aired on what she calls the "Mack Daddy" of all stages-the Super Bowl. But unlike her favorite team, the Chicago Bears, who struggled to compete, she fell just short of winning the top prize.

Dehnert, a 1991 graduate in speech communication, was one of five finalists in Doritos' "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, in which over 1,000 people submitted self-produced commercials. On-line voting then decided the winning commercial, which would be aired during the first quarter of Sunday's Super Bowl between the Bears and the Indianapolis Colts.

As it turned out, only a few hundred votes separated Dehnert's "Check Out Girl" commercial from the winning entry, "Live the Flavor." As a result, Doritos decided to air both commercials during the game. What's more, the company says it plans to run all five finalists nationally to kick off their first consumer-created ad campaign.

The "Check Out Girl" commercial featured the interaction between a customer in a grocery line and an irrepressible check-out girl, enthusiastic over the many flavors of Doritos.

Dehnert, an aspiring director now working as a location manager for commercials in Los Angeles, says "Check Out Girl" is already opening doors professionally.
