LAS students receive Gilman Scholarships.
June 1, 2012

Seven College of Liberal Arts and Sciences undergraduates were offered federally funded Gilman Scholarships to study abroad during the fall and academic year 2012-13, helping place Illinois among the top 10 institutions nationally this year in number of recipients, with 11 total.

The scholarship provides financially disadvantaged students eligible for federal Pell Grants with scholarships of up to $5,000 to study abroad. Illinois recipients were among the 1,200 awardees nationally.

LAS recipients include:

Carolina Delonga, of Belleville, Ill., a sophomore in global studies, will be spending the 2012-2013 academic year in Japan, while participating in the East Asian Languages and Cultures: Year in Japan program.

Kaori Nakamura, a sophomore in global studies from Wilmette, Ill., will spend fall 2012 in Hong Kong at the University of Hong Kong.

Jose Ortiz Rodriquez, a junior in global studies from Schaumburg, Ill., will work in France with the Internships in Francophone Europe program during fall 2012.

Khushali Rami, of Volo, Ill., a senior in economics, will study in Australia at the University of Queensland in fall 2012.

Teresa Scalise, of Tinley Park, Ill., a sophomore in linguistics, will study in Argentina during spring 2013 as a participant in Butler University’s Argentine Universities Program.

Kiersten Vincent, a junior in Germanic languages and literatures from Princeton, Ill., will participate in the Austria-Illinois Exchange Program in Austria for the academic year 2012-2013.

Eda Xian, a junior in molecular and cellular biology from Chicago, will spend the academic year 2012-2013 studying at the University of Hong Kong.

The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the pool of students who study abroad and the countries and regions to which they go. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education.

At Illinois, the administration of the scholarship program is shared by the Office of Student Financial Aid, which advertises the award; campus study abroad offices that certify applications; and the National and International Scholarships Program, which offers reviews of student materials and provides feedback to Illinois applicants. Applications for spring 2013 Gilman study abroad scholarships are due by October 2.
