Study language at the University of Illinois
Experience a world of differences by studying French, Slavic studies, or linguistics & teaching English as a second language.
Learn how languages are structured, how they are used, and how they change through time. Linguistics + TESL is designed for students interested in teaching English as an additional language. You'll be prepared to teach in private and boarding schools in the U.S. and in international public and private schools abroad. You'll also be equipped for careers in international English language teaching, publishing, and testing organizations.
In French, you'll dive deep into the language, linguistics, literature, and rich cultural traditions of France. Through engaging courses and small group discussions, you'll develop strong language skills while exploring diverse aspects of French society and history. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in French culture firsthand through study abroad programs, enhancing your global perspective.
In Slavic studies, you'll engage with novels, poetry, and films that tackle complex themes, from the ethical dilemmas of violence and war to the deeper nuances of love and friendship. Through these works, you'll gain insight into the historical and cultural contexts that shape the Slavic world. With the option to study abroad, you'll have the chance to immerse yourself in the culture and experience firsthand the environments that inspired these powerful narratives.
And these are just a few of the liberal arts and sciences majors available at the University of Illinois!
Hear from current students why you should choose the College of LAS:

"I wasn't aware that my degree in linguistics could translate to a passion for entrepreneurship, but my eyes were opened while at UIUC."
- TREDAYNE, LINGUISTICS ALUMNUS

I worked with Tricia Thrasher, a PhD candidate in French, to study how virtual reality technology can be integrated in second language learning classrooms to reduce foreign language anxiety. I gained a mentorship relationship with Tricia that has aided me beyond our research work.
