Scholarship FAQs for incoming students
Here are answers to questions from incoming students that we frequently hear about scholarships offered throughout the College of LAS.
How do I apply for LAS scholarships offered to new students?
You do not have to apply. If you are an admitted student to the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, you will be automatically considered for scholarships administered by the College of LAS. The information from your application for admission is used for scholarship consideration. For need-based scholarships, the information you provide on your FAFSA is also used for consideration. To be considered for any need-based scholarships, a FAFSA must be completed.
What factors are taken into consideration when awarding scholarships?
The LAS scholarships that are offered to new students are primarily funded by gifts from donors. These scholarships match the wishes of the respective donor as to what type of student should be awarded their scholarship. Some scholarships are strictly merit-based, others take both merit and financial need into consideration, and a number of scholarships have more specific parameters such as the student’s major or high school from which they graduated.
When will I find out if I have received an LAS scholarship?
If you were admitted Early Action, you will be notified in mid to late February. If you were admitted Regular Action, you will be notified in mid-March.
What are the amounts of scholarships LAS awards?
There are approximately 30 different types of scholarships LAS awards to new students every year. Each scholarship has different award amounts that range from $1,000 per year to $6,000 per year.
Are LAS scholarships renewable after the first year?
It depends on the scholarship. Many LAS scholarships are renewable for up to 4 years. Other scholarships are awarded for only the first year a student is enrolled. If you are awarded a scholarship, this information will be shared in your scholarship award letter.
What are the renewal criteria for LAS scholarships?
This also varies depending on the scholarship awarded. However, every LAS scholarship requires that a student be enrolled full-time in the College of LAS. Every LAS scholarship also has a minimum GPA requirement, but the specific GPA varies depending on the scholarship. If you are awarded a scholarship, this information will be shared in your scholarship award letter.
What is the overall amount of LAS scholarships awarded each year and how many students receive LAS scholarships?
For the 2019-2020 academic year, the College of LAS awarded approximately 130 recruitment scholarships to new and continuing students for a total of $512,000.
Do academic departments award scholarships?
