Phi Beta Kappa's Newest Members
Phi Beta Kappa, the country’s oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the liberal arts, recently invited new members to join its chapter at the University of Illinois. The names of these outstanding students—18 juniors, 70 seniors, and six recent graduates—are listed below.
Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa has fewer than 300 chapters nationally. The U of I Gamma chapter was chartered in 1907. Criteria for selection into the society include academic achievement within the top 1 percent of the junior class or the top 7 percent for seniors and graduates within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Membership in the society is by invitation only, and it is considered a life-long mark of distinction to receive an invitation.
The formal initiation of new members will take place during Commencement weekend on Friday, May 15, 2009, at the Illini Union Ballroom at 7 p.m. Family and friends are invited.
