Undergrad research: Take on real-world projects on campus

Emma SchusterAt the University of Illinois, countless opportunities and resources allow you to get involved in research. Even as an undergraduate student, you have the ability to work on real-world projects with professors and faculty here at Illinois. The College of LAS is incredibly diverse in terms of people and study, so doing research here on campus is more possible than you may think! It’s is an incredible opportunity to develop academically and professionally within your field of interest. No matter your curiosity, you are bound to find someone here who does active research in that field and is willing to help you get involved!

I personally have been participating in an independent research lab on campus since I was a sophomore. I work in a chemistry lab developing a small molecule therapeutic agent that targets the genetic basis of myotonic dystrophy type 1. Since starting in this lab, I have gained invaluable hands-on experience with lab techniques and data—none of those prefabricated classroom experiments. Working in research taught me how to think independently and critically, improved my confidence with lab techniques, helped me excel in classes, and fostered relationships with professors and graduate students. It’s been one of the most valuable experiences of my undergraduate career!

So, how do you actually start a research experience here in LAS? My No. 1 tip would be to talk to professors. It’s how my research experience started: I talked with my organic chemistry professor about my specific interests and goals. He ultimately offered me a position in his lab. Even if a certain professor can’t take you into his or her lab (whether it be for space, financial, or experience reasons), almost all professors here on campus are willing to meet and help you find a group that fits your specific interests. So, do not be afraid to get the conversation started!

Now, wait. What if I am not in a STEM field and still want to do research? You definitely can! Research in LAS does not have to be the stereotypical lab-bench-and-microscope kind of work. You can find research opportunities across all departments and fields of study that LAS has to offer. You can research the regional use of an international language, models of group behavior, issues of income disparity, preservation systems for historical artifacts, issues of social and cultural prevalence, how the brain responds to stress, and so much more.

Getting involved with research is one of the many incredible opportunities open to you as an LAS student. Along with research come opportunities to be published and to present at local, national, and even international conferences. LAS research experiences distinguish you from a crowd and will help you excel in your studies. Come with curiosity, and the LAS faculty will help you discover answers!
