The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS) is pleased to announce the return of the AY26–27 Program of Faculty Study in a Second Discipline—a bold initiative designed to support tenured faculty in expanding their scholarly horizons through immersive, interdisciplinary study.

What is it?

This program offers tenured LAS faculty the opportunity to pursue structured study in a field outside their primary discipline. Whether you're a historian exploring data science, a chemist engaging with anthropology, or a philosopher delving into neuroscience, this fellowship empowers you to forge new intellectual pathways that enrich your research, teaching, and creative work.

Who is eligible to apply?

Tenured faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences are eligible. Applicants must propose a structured plan of study in a discipline that is distinct from their current field and not already central to their research or teaching.

What kinds of disciplinary pairings are encouraged?

The program supports intellectually adventurous combinations that bridge traditional boundaries. Examples include:

How many fellowships will be awarded?

Up to four full-time equivalent (FTE) fellowships will be awarded. Fellows may apply for one semester or a full academic year of released time.

What funding is provided?

The LAS Office of Research will provide:

  • $32,000 for a full-year fellowship
  • $16,000 for a one-semester fellowship
    Funds are directed to the Fellow’s home department to support course release.

Can this fellowship be taken alongside a sabbatical?

Yes. Applicants may pursue the fellowship in conjunction with a sabbatical. Selection as a Fellow does not affect sabbatical leave accumulation.

Yes. The program especially encourages applications from:

  • Faculty experiencing barriers to their scholarship or research
  • Scientists seeking to integrate humanistic or social perspectives into their work

What is expected of Fellows?

Fellows must:

  • Submit a brief report at the end of the fellowship
  • Participate in a follow-up inquiry three years later
