College of LAS announces named positions

15 professors honored for contributions to research and education

Fifteen professors have been honored with named positions.

The College of LAS has honored 15 professors with named scholar and professorship positions in recognition of their contributions to research and education at the University of Illinois.

The named positions include the I. C. Gunsalus Scholar, the Helen Corley Petit Scholars, and the LAS Dean’s Distinguished Professorial Scholars. The awardees are as follows:

I. C. Gunsalus Scholar

The I.C. Gunsalus Scholar recognizes young faculty members for their scholarship and teaching in physical and life sciences. Recipients hold the title for one academic year and receive support for their research and teaching.

This recipient is Chunyuan Diao, geography and geographic information science

Helen Corley Petit Scholars

The Helen Corley Petit Scholar recognizes early career faculty members for their scholarship and teaching. Recipients hold the title for one academic year and receive support for their research and teaching.

The recipients are:

Daniel Berwick Evans, mathematics

Jamie Jones, English

Paola Mera, microbiology

Bobby Smith II, African American studies

Myoung-Sun Song, East Asian languages and literatures

Xiao Su, chemical and biomolecular engineering

Emily Van Duyn, communication

LAS Dean’s Distinguished Professorial Scholars

The LAS Dean’s Distinguished Professorial Scholars award is presented to excellent faculty who are under consideration to be promoted from associate to full professor. Recipients hold the title for one academic year and receive support for their research and teaching. 

The recipients are:

 Eric Calderwood, comparative and world literature

David Cooper, Slavic languages and literature

Ying Diao, chemical and biomolecular engineering

Patricia Gregg, earth science and environmental change

Mimi Nguyen, gender and women’s studies

Lori Raetzman, molecular and integrative physiology

Gisela Sin, political science
