Tips for managing time between classes and social life

Three girls sitting on the grass on the Quad in front of Lincoln HallAs a first semester senior, I know how hard it is to balance classes and school work with social life and making memories with your friends and peers. So, here are some tips to manage them both:

1. Make a calendar with your academic deadlines and social events

Have all your due dates marked on your calendar and set reminders for them one day in advance, so that you get them done early and are not working on them till the last minute. If you know you have a social event coming up that you are keen on going to, plan ahead—do your assignments and study for upcoming exams in advance so you don’t have to miss it!

2. Embrace the “work hard, play hard” concept

Every time you finish a big assignment or an exam, reward yourself with a social activity such as hanging out with your friends, getting food with your peers, etc.

3. Don’t overdo either

It’s important to maintain a balance between academics and social life. This may be hard but the way to ensure it is by checking in with yourself every now and then. Are you spending way too much time on a class that you know you will be fine in and, hence, missing out socially? Are you staying out too late, impacting your sleep schedule and your grades? You know yourself best and have to make decisions on when and where to compromise.

4. Figure out your most efficient way of studying

Knowing which method of studying works best for you helps in many ways. Firstly, you’ll be able to study more efficiently, giving you more time to attend social events. Secondly, studying will take less mental energy and effort, so you’re not as tired as you would be with another method. Essentially, you’re working smarter, not harder!

So, being more mindful of how you’re spending your time in relation to academics or social aspects is the key to having a balance while in college. After all, your time at Illinois is supposed to be a time of learning and growth, both in and out of the classroom, and with a few tweaks and organization, you’ll be set to succeed!
