Staying on campus this summer? Here are some tips on what to do
You might think that staying in Champaign-Urbana over the summer is boring and lonely, but it doesn’t have to be that way! There are many fun activities and events you can be a part of. All you have to do is push yourself and keep an open mind—even if that means venturing outside of Campustown. Recent alumna Aashna gives some tips on what to do on campus and in the C-U area during the summer:
1. Stay updated with ongoing campus events
There are still many events hosted by different schools and places within U of I during the summer. The Illini Union hosts movie nights at the Quad every Thursday. Krannert and the Virginia Theatre both host various entertainment events such as theatre productions and live music. You can also go bowling at the Illini Union or go swimming at the Activities & Recreation Center. With campus being less busy, summer is a great time to visit the ARC. You could also attend Japanese tea tasting ceremonies at the Japan House. There really are so many things to do on campus.
2. Take a step outside campus
Staying on campus is comfortable, but pushing yourself to step outside your comfort zone is important so you don’t miss out! You could pet goats, donkeys and horses at Prairie Farm, watch a movie at the Savoy Theatre, be a part of the LEGO club at the Mahomet Public Library and more. Champaign and Urbana also have great public libraries. Stop by the Champaign Public library to browse books and get a coffee at the Library Cafe while you’re there. If you’re closer to Urbana, the Urbana Free Library is a great place to look at books, as well as check out what local events are going on. If you want to go outside and touch some grass, the C-U area is home to a wealth of parks. Hazel Park and West Side Park are both right outside Downtown Champaign, and Carle Park has a beautiful pavilion if you’re looking for somewhere to take pictures or just admire architecture. 3. Explore downtown Champaign
While we’re on the topic of venturing outside of Campustown, Downtown Champaign is very lively and pleasant, with so many hidden gems. It’s not too far away from campus, so if you’re still on campus, you could take the bus or even walk there. Whether it’s visiting the farmers market every Tuesday, attending a book club reading at the Literary on Saturdays or just strolling by and getting coffee and pastries at Suzu’s bakery or Martinelli’s market, downtown has everything and more. When I was here over the summer, I couldn’t believe these places could exist in Champaign! I was so happy I discovered them so I could take my friends there when they were back on campus.
Campus may not be the same without everyone around, but it’s up to you to make it one of the best summers of your college life. Take advantage of all the amazing places and events around you. As a graduating senior, I can assure you, time is fleeting!
