Main Navigation structure

When it comes to Navigation, consistency is key. In keeping with the university’s standards for consistent navigation across sites, the College of LAS has also implemented navigation guidelines for its unit websites. While there is some flexibility for units that do not fall into the standard model, there are a few required elements for items in the main navigation.

All department sites must include the following links in their main (top-level) navigation:

  • Admissions
  • Academics
  • Research
  • Departments (Schools only)
  • People
  • Alumni

In addition to the required navigation items above, a department or school may choose an additional two items from the list below:

  • Resources or About
  • News or News & Events
  • Events
  • Outreach
  • Diversity

All department sites must have “Alumni” as their last navigation item.

Units should aim for 7-8 items in their main navigation bar. If additional navigation items are needed, please reach out to the College of LAS Office of Communications and Marketing for guidance.

Other Schools and Programs

Units such as centers and programs may not have the same navigation needs as departments and schools. However, to keep navigation as consistent as possible, they should start with the same naming conventions and order of navigation items as departments and schools. Please work with the College of LAS Office of Communications and Marketing to modify as appropriate. For guidance on navigation naming structures, see the University’s Brand Guidelines for Web and Navigation.

There may be unique circumstances that warrant deviation from this policy. In such cases, requests will be reviewed and considered by the Office of Communications and Marketing.
