Information for exchange partners

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is proud to collaborate with universities around the world to enable ongoing exchange of students and scholars.

The college's International Programs office works with coordinators at partner universities to assist their students through the application process and provides exchange students with ongoing support during their time on campus in Illinois.

Students will also receive support from the International Student and Scholar Services office, which is responsible for immigration services for all international students at Illinois, including exchange students. Students are required to submit documentation, complete federally-mandated check-in, and attend orientation with ISSS, as outlined in the application process.

Application deadlines

If applying for fall or the full academic year (August start), the application deadline is March 15. If applying for spring or the full academic year (January start), the application deadline is Sept. 15.

Credit and grading systems

Coursework is counted in semester credit hours. In general, one credit hour represents a one-hour class period that requires at least two hours of individual study each week for one semester. Thus, a semester three-credit-hour course would meet for three hours a week and the student would be expected to perform at least six hours of homework, self-study, and/or research outside of class. A full semester course load is considered 12-18 credit hours.
